Colostrum: Life’s First Food
By Donald R. Henderson, M.D., M.P.H.Colostrum

Colostrum is Nature’s own miracle. Colostrum is one of the first natural supplements on the market that is backed by 20 years of solid and extensive research conducted by the traditional medical establishment. Studies have shown that colostrum can powerfully boost the immune system, accelerate healing of all types of injuries, burn fat and build lean muscle mass, increase vitality and stamina and create an anti-aging effect.

Colostrum is the first mammary-secreted nourishment that mammals, including humans, give its newborn for the first 24 to 48 hours of life. It contains numerous immune-system compounds and growth factors, which trigger at least 50 processes in newborns, ranging from the development of the immune system to the growth of all body cells. Medical evidence also shows that adults, by taking bovine colostrum, can get the same wide-ranging benefits that human colostrum offers newborns.

Bovine colostrum is taken from dairy cows during the first 24 hours after calving. Recent research has shown that the combination of the immune and growth factors in cow’s colostrum is highly bio-available to humans. Bovine colostrum contains powerful protease inhibitors that minimize or prevent the colostrum’s damage from stomach acid.

Colostrum supports the human organism in two main ways. First, its multiple immune factors and natural antibiotics provide strong support for the immune system. Second, its many growth factors offer a broad-spectrum boost to encourage optimum health and healing.

Epidemiologists and researchers are warning that new strains of harmful bacteria and viruses are showing up with frightening speed all over the world. Most of the drugs currently in the conventional medical pharmaceutical arsenal are becoming helpless against these new 'killer bugs" and viruses. The over-use of antibiotics has led to a current situation where medical science is helpless to fight new drug-resistant strains of common infectious bacteria.

Colostrum’s immune factors greatly strengthen our body’s natural defenses to many disease-causing bacteria and viruses. Studies show colostrum contains a variety of powerful immune factors (Immunoglobulins, Cytokines and Interferon) that work to restore potent immune function. Colostrum also contains PRP (Proline-Rich-Peptides), shown in medical studies to help regulate an under- or over-active immune system.

Lactoferrin, also contained in colostrum, has been shown in numerous research studies to be a potent, broad-spectrum natural antibiotic and anti-viral agent.

As a physician who specializes in Gastroenterology, I am greatly concerned about the increasing number of antibiotics that are becoming ineffective, particularly as we discover more and more diseases that are caused by infectious agents. And the intestinal tract may not be the most glamorous area of the body, but it is the foundation of health. Colostrum contains many compounds of critical importance in human health. A recent study conducted at Harvard Medical School, demonstrates that bovine immunoglobulins resist breakdown in the gastrointestinal tract, are absorbed into the blood stream and retain their ability to help prevent and treat diseases.

There are many other benefits of taking colostrum. Growth factors are also found in colostrum. These have been shown to benefit tissue repair, boost the body’s ability to metabolize fat and build lean muscle tissue, and balance blood sugar and brain chemical levels.
